The Animal Ordinances for the City of Terre Haute, City of West Terre Haute, and for Vigo County residents who live outside of City limits are linked below. All ordinances provide basic requirements for animal care and welfare, with fines for non-compliance.

Highlights

  • Pets (dogs, cats, ferrets) must be registered; registration fee is $5 for each animal, paid annually. Upon renewal, spayed/neutered animals will be exempt from the renewal fee. Animals must display tag or have microchip.
  • $25 Hobby Breeder's Permit, Companion Animals - maximum 1 unaltered female over 6 months age and 1 unaltered male; only 1 litter per female per year; 8 weeks minimum age for sale/trade/give away; $100 fine for each non-compliance.
  • $100 Commercial Breeder's Permit, Companion Animals - maximum 30 unaltered female over 6 months age; only 1 litter per female per year; 8 weeks minimum age for sale/trade/give away; offspring must have initial immunizations; must allow periodic inspection of breeding facility; up to $100 fine for each non-compliance.
  • Rescue/sanctuary organizations with 10+ animals must have annual registration; cost is $25 per site.
  • Owners of exotic, wild, poisonous, constricting animals/reptiles must register their animals; cost is $25 annually per site.
